How did Hazrat Umar accept Islam?
Hazrat Umar (R.A) accepted Islam after a year from the date of migration to Abyssinia, Hazrat Umar ibn al Khattab (R.A) plotted against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and intended to kill him.
While he met his best friend Nu’aim bin Abdullah (R.a) Nu’aim bin Abdullah was already converted to Islam but not publicly, in absence of information Hazrat Omar Farooq(R.A) informed Nu’aim that he is going to kill Muhammad (Phub).
Nu’aim asked Umar (R.a) to check his own house first as his sister and brother-in-law were already converted to Islam, when Hazrat Umar ibn al Khattab reached their house he heard voice of reciting Quran his sister and brother-in-law were reciting Surah Ta’ha along with the cousin of Omar Farooq (R.A) called Saeed bin Zaid (R.a).
Hazrat Umar Started fighting with his brother-in-law when his sister came to intervene Hazrat Omar (R.A) started fighting with her also, his sister made a statement if Umar (R.A) wishes to kill them he can but they shall never desert Islam.
After listening to these words Umar (R.A) slapped her so hard that she fell on the floor and her mouth started bleeding, this made him realize that Omar (R.A) was really harsh on his sister.
He asked what were they reciting but his sister denied and asked him to wash his body before touching the scripture Omar (R.A) kept insisting but she handed it over only after Umar (R.A) took a bath he recited the verses himself and smashed into tears.
Then he himself proclaimed verily these are the words of true God and He is only one has the right to be worshiped.
This was the moment when Omar proclaimed shahada that I bear witness Muhammad (PBUH) is the messenger of Allah.
Once Umar proclaimed his shahada Saeed ibn Zaid who was hidden inside the room due to fear, came out and informed Omar (R.A) that Prophet (PBUH) made a dua in favor of Umar ibn al Khattab (R.a) for embracing Islam and it has been accepted.

Why is Hazrat Umar called Farooq?
Hazrat Umar (R.A) was given this title Farooq, it means redeemer (the one who could make difference between right & wrong), as Hazrat Omar (R.A), was a very just ruler and always made a decision with pure justice so he was known as Farooq.
There is a very famous incident of his justice with his own son, Hazrat Omar (R.A) all of sudden used to go the market or other places for the inspection without prior information to check whether everything is going as per the instructions (with justice).
Let us come back to the incident there was a field in Medina city where all the camels used to graze, Omar (R.A) came for the inspection and found few camels were overweight in comparison to others.
Umar (R.a) inquired about the master of those camels it was his own son, he asked how come these camels are overweight than others.
His son clearly told that he never asked for taking care more his camels due to his father’s position but other people themselves and took care of them more than others.
After listening to this Hazrat Omar (R.A) ordered his son to vend these camels and take the amount equaling to weaker camels
The difference of the amount should be deposited in the public funds as the grass which the camels grazed was the property of all the people of Medina & it should be equally divided among all.
How many years did Hazrat Umar rule?
The Second Caliph of Islam ruled 10 years and in these ten years the Islamic empire expanded greatly, he conquered several countries including Jerusalem.
At the time while the Arabic army entered in Jerusalem, the Christians and Jews of Jerusalem put one condition in front of Muslims that they shall hand over the city to the caliph directly as they had heard about his humbleness and justice, they themselves wanted to see if it is true or not.
Hazrat Omar (R.A) had a discussion with his consultants some of them denied & some of them agreed so finally he made a call to go to Jerusalem with one his companions.
Be informed being the caliph, Hazrat Umar (R.A) had only 2-3 pair of clothes and two robes which he got from public treasury after consulting with the public all his life.
He used these darned clothes, while he intended to leave for Jerusalem some of his companions suggested to get a new pair of clothes as he going to meet the high authorities there.
He replied that the character and behavior of a Muslim are more important than his clothes.
At last, he started his journey with one of his companions with one camel and they agreed on the specific distance that they will swap seating over the camel.
While they reached near the gate of Jerusalem the Jews, Christians and Muslims all were waiting for his arrival, so it was the turn of the companion to sit over the camel, but he offered Ameer Al Mumineen to sit over camel and asked him to remain to be seated.
Caliph denied and asked him will he bear his burden of this injustice on the day of judgment?
The companion remained silent and they entered in Jerusalem likewise, after Omar was recognized as a caliph by the Muslims who were already present there they introduced Ameer ul Momineen to the high authorities.
The Jews & Christians finally surrendered Jerusalem without a second thought after seeing Omar’s justice, humbleness and simplicity.

Hazrat Umar Ibn Al Khattab was assassinated by one of the Persian slaves named Abu Lulu, the motive of his assassination is not clear though.
Abu Lulu plotted against Umar Ibn Al Khattab & reached Masjid e Nabwi before Umar ibn al Khattab could reach for Fajr prayer, Abu Lulu was hidden somewhere in Masjid e Nabwi.
Abu Lulu Stabbed Omar six times in his belly and finally in navel while Hazrat Umar ibn Al Khattab was leading the Fajr prayer, this fatal attack took Hazrat Umar’s life after three days of stabbing.
After stabbing Hazrat Umar, Abu Lulu could escape from Masjid e Nabvi but people caught him in the city and he killed himself with the same blade.
Abu Lulu died on the same day of the assassination of Umar Ibn Al Khattab and Umar Ibn Al Khattab could survive 3-4 days before dying.
As per his will, he was buried next to the prophet’s and the grave the first caliph of prophet Hazrat Abu Baqr.
Hazrat Umar’s famous incidents during his Caliphate.
Although Umar used to do all his judgments and take all responsibilities in the daytime but going out in the darkness of night on the streets of the city to check if anyone needs his help or someone is struggling due to anything which is not available to him was also a part of his regular practice.
Hazrat Umar and Old Women
One-night Omar was patrolling, he noticed the lights in one house and heard the weeping sound of some kids, Umar got closer to this house and addressed the lady of the house after knocking the door to inquire the reason why kids were weeping.
The lady replied her kids were weeping because of hunger, and she was pretending to cook something in front of the kids in the hope that her kids would get exhausted and sleep.
This sad situation made Umar(R.a) feel guilty, he thought this family was starving due to the miss management what Umar has made, Umar promised to provide the immediate relief for her family.
Umar went to Baitul Maal (Treasury) and collected the best possible food for her and her family, his slave called Aslam insisted to carry the bag of food.
But Umar cried and replied even if a dog dies due to hunger or miss management in Umar’s caliphate so Umar is the one who is answerable at the day of judgment in front of Allah SBT so let me carry my burden for that day.
Hazrat Umar came back to her house, handed over the bag to the lady and helped her to cook the food by the time food was ready children were still awakened and served the food.
While the children ate the food their fill and smiled after seeing this even Umar (R.A) was happy.
he posed a question to the lady that why she didn’t have any support, the lady told that her husband is dead and there was no one to support her family, whatever little they had it is consumed gradually and now they are starving since last three days.
Ameer ul Mumineen asked why she didn’t take her concern in the knowledge of Ameer Al Muineen she said she had some sense of self-respect, she didn’t want to go and beg in front of anyone further she added it is the responsibility of Caliph to check if anyone needs his help in his territory.
Umar (R.a) accepted what that lady said, begged her pardon for the past, promised her and rest of people’s responsibility.
There are many stories like these of Hazrat Umar in which he set several examples for the better way of living.
If we want to see how Muslims were supposed to live life even after Prophet passed away these four caliphs which are called khulfa e rashedeen has set best examples by following the sunnah of Prophet (PBUH).
